Last year, I shared tips on how to put together a perfect Mother’s Day brunch menu, and all of that still applies if that’s the route you’re going. I keep my Mother’s Day post on the site updated with new recipes I think work well. This year, I’ve rounded up a few delicious ideas for a relaxed Mother’s Day lunch. Since it’s autumn here in South Africa and spring in the Northern Hemisphere, I’ve included what’s in season in both to help spark a bit of inspiration.
🍁 What’s in season in autumn – Southern Hemisphere (March to May)
Here are a few of the fruits and vegetables that are in season now (autumn) to give you inspiration for recipes.
Vegetables:
Butternut, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, leeks, mushrooms.
Fruits:
Apples, pears, figs, grapes, pomegranates, guavas, quinces, persimmons, peaches, nectarines, plums.
A few recipe ideas……
To Start
Pear, blue cheese and walnut salad with maple vinaigrette
This is the perfect Autumnal salad and great as a starter for an indulgent feast. Allow the pears to ripen to their full potential for this salad.
Creamy broccoli and Cheddar soup
Twice-baked, make-ahead cheese soufflé
This delicious recipe can be prepped ahead and would be good all year round. I love the mixed salad with brown butter braised sultanas, which add a pop of sweetness and tart acidity to offset the richness of the dish.
For Mains
Roast chicken in white wine, herbs, garlic & potatoes
This is a one-roasting-pan wonder where time does all the heavy lifting. Blanched green beans or broccoli would be a perfect side.
Three delicious slow-braised dishes that can be made in advance are: Joel Robuchon's Beef Bourguignon, osso bucco with risotto Milanese and the best coq au vin (available in my ebook Comfort).
I have put my eBook COMFORT on SALE for Mother's Day, and it is now only R100 ($5.5 USD or £4 GBP or €4.8 Euro) available to download HERE (until 11 May).
It is worth buying Comfort just for the coq au vin recipe, and I also include an option to make it into the most delicious pie. My eBook has the best ox tail recipe I know, too.
I love slow braises, and Comfort has a delicious Greek Lamb Yvetsi recipe. Another fantastic option to feed a crowd.
These desserts are a few of my favourites from Comfort and have not been published elsewhere:
Raspberry bundt cakes
The Milk tart brioche doughnuts might be my favourite recipe in the book. Decadent and ridiculously delicious.
Here are a few more pics of recipes in the book:
Comfort is a collection of 42 deliciously nostalgic and familiar recipes that are designed with the pure pleasure of eating in mind. In this crazy world filled with uncertainty, this is my idea of a culinary hug. With four chapters spanning eating occasions throughout the day, there is a little bit of everything in this eBook.
From eggcentric breakfasts to casual favourites, as well as a few amazing & cheesy vegetarian dishes, and a load of hearty mains. I finish off with a sweet chapter filled with desserts and bakes. I hope that these recipes will find a permanent spot in your cooking repertoire and bring much delicious comfort.
This is a Digital eBook and will be delivered to you via email as a downloadable PDF. The PDF can be viewed on any digital device (smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer) and may be printed at home for personal use.
